Once again we are opening are offices as part of the Heritage Open day celebration. The Open Days are now an important event in the City’s annual calendar of festivals.
The offices of Burstalls Solicitors are open on Friday 7th September and Saturday 8th September 2017 between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. respectively so that any member of the public can see inside the impressive Grade II Listed Building, in particular, the spacious vaults which run under the footprint of the building and under Lowgate.
The building is Grade II Listed and was built in 1899 to 1901. The building has a strong stone façade, is asymmetrical with Baroque touches, has shallow cantered bays divided by squat ionic columns, mannerist gables and a heavy rusticated entrance. As well as the imposing exterior of the building, the interior is particularly impressive and of great interest. In addition to the large boardrooms on the ground floor at the front of the building, there is an ornate mosaic floor on both ground floor level and at basement level. The staircase is of Edwardian construction and is particularly fine. It is understood this is one of the reasons why the building is Grade II listed.
Perhaps most interesting are the spacious vaults which run under the footprint of the building and under Lowgate. Prior to the building of the Hull Tidal Barrier, Lowgate used to flood regularly, and these vaults were built to be flood proof as well as fire and theft proof. As part of the Heritage Open Weekend, Burstalls Solicitors have agreed to open these vaults for viewing, and you can see the fine labyrinth of passages under the footprint of the building. It is also interesting to look at the internal workings of the safe doors which were built by the same company that installed the Harrods’ Store Vaults and also the Army and Navy Safes in Rotterdam, as evidenced on the inside of the doors of the strong room vaults.
