Probate Fees

Description Fee
Obtaining the Grant and administering the Estate including advice in dealing with the Estate, collecting and distributing money, property and assets following a person’s death £2,000 to £6,000
+ VAT depending on what work is required
To apply for a Grant only £950 to £1250 + VAT
Disbursements (money we pay out for you) Only some of these will be applicable
Probate Court Fee £156 including two copies of the Grant of Representation although these are to be increased significantly in April 2019 (see below)
Commissioners Fees £11.00 per Personal Representative and £2.00 per exhibit  
Section 27 Notices (Creditor’s Notices) £150 to £200
Property Valuation Report if required £150 to £350
Bankruptcy Searches £2 (each)
Will Search Fees £90 (Certainty Will Search)


The amount of work required will depend on the circumstances of the particular matter.  The fees set out above include probate matters that are standard and basic and involve no disputes.  The circumstances that would affect this which would lead to an increase in fees are as follows albeit not limited to:-

  1. Ambiguous Wills
  2. Beneficiaries / Personal Representatives based abroad
  3. Bankrupt Beneficiaries or Personal Representatives
  4. Trusts in Wills
  5. Contested probate matters where any part of the probate is contested by the Beneficiary or the Personal Representatives
  6. Family disputes within the probate
  7. DWP investigations
  8. Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Income Tax advice
  9. Dispute over assets
  10. Assets without clear title
  11. Tracing of Beneficiaries/Personal Representatives
  12. Appointment of Attorneys for Personal Representatives
  13. Minor Beneficiaries

The work undertaken will be charged at the hourly rate of the fee earner conducting the case.

In addition to the fees quoted above VAT will be charged at the applicable rate which is currently 20%.

A value element may also be added to reflect the value of any money or property involved as well as other matters mentioned in the Solicitors Remuneration Order 1972.  In dealing with Estates the value element would be:-

I. If we are instructed by the Personal Representatives ½% value of residence
1% of remainder

II. If we are appointed co-Personal Representative or the Personal Representative ¾% value of residence
1½% of remainder
